Well, life started about the same as usual today. I got Charly Kate coaxed out of bed and headed down the stairs for a bit of breakfast. (Does that sound about right to you? Well, guess what? It isn’t necessarily anything close to the norm in this world any more. Most kids are heading down the stairs to the waiting arms of their TV set…or, their I-Pad….or, well, you get the picture.) This whole “going-down-to-a-healthy-breakfast” routine was a
hard battle that I started about a year ago after watching her spending more and more of her mornings zombie-like in front of the TV…..with hardly a bite of food entering her mouth before she headed out for the day at school. Let’s stop doing this with our kids. Let’s take the time…and, yes, the energy….and, get the little boogers to put something into their bodies that will make them energetic and active….and, not a mess before they even get a chance at the start of their lives. CK has become pretty good at picking breakfasts….thankfully….and, this morning was no exception. She chose Free Range Buffalo Sausage….(Yes. You read that right. It arrived yesterday from M & S Meats in Kalispell,
Montana…..along with a huge plastic bag containing a ton of their Wild Elk Jerky! Now, in truth, many of you may think that I may have a slight tendency to “eat well at any cost”. And, perhaps you are right. But, the fact is that the Wild Buffalo Sausage was priced a bit higher than today’s closing price on
gold….and, yes. I mean an ounce to ounce comparison! But, on the other hand, you can sleep better knowing that it seems like the Jerky was priced in a manner that would work for everyday eating. Wow. They were both awesome….although your teeth better be pretty solidly grounded if you are gonna take a run at the Jerky! I love the flavor. But, it is a bit of a challenge to get it torn apart and into your belly. Even so, neither of us could get quite enough of it.) Although CK was throwing back some free range meat and organic berries…..(why won’t
that kid eat any of the Organic Cheese from Whole Foods along with that stuff?)…….. I was only prepared to ingest another of my Isagenix Undenatured Whey Protein Shakes. Mainly Vanilla with a bit of chocolate mixed in for that hint of flavor. And, don’t worry, after I threw in a ton of Organic Flax seed, I covered that up with about $2 or $3 worth of Raw Organic Almond Butter and less
than a teaspoon of Organic Honey. I know all that sounds like a $20 shake. But, I really think the whole thing gets put together for about $4 or $5. And, throw in about $1 worth of Organic Berries….and, you got yourself a 5 dollar breakfast that beats that heck out of the same dollars spent anywhere else on the morning’s early fare.
Following a couple of hours in the office, I should have come downstairs and got my apple and almond butter craving out of the way for the day. If you care whatsoever for your own wellbeing, I suggest that you make that a
pattern…..starting today…..and, swap out the afternoon snack (that I am currently using for my apple break) for the Protein Shake that I am about to ingest right now. The last thing on Earth that your body probably needs right now is some more high concentration protein mixture. The smart money would be to get another serving of organic fruit into your body before the noon hour comes your way. Fruit’s antioxidative benefits are well known….but, so are the levels of sugar that can be found in all fruit….Yes. It is natural sugar. But, still, it is probably best to stop putting it into your belly as soon as the big hand on the clock starts making its march down the right hand side of the clock each day.
(By the way, if you take my advice and use this time slot to get another serving of Organic Fruit, please MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT EAT IT WITHOUT A PROTEIN SOURCE WITH IT. Even some Raw Almonds would be fine….you don’t have to eat Almond Butter….But, do not ingest your fruit snack without something to balance the lop-sided glycemic spike that would otherwise be the result of eating fruit by itself! Remember, eating healthy also means keeping your blood sugar levels flat!) Okay. You guessed it. I did not eat my other daily serving of fruit for my morning snack…..I drank another protein shake for my morning snack….Yeah. About 10:30 am. Same exact mixture as what you remember from last time. And, yes. I loved it just as much as the last 3 million I have drank just like it!
A quick aside here: Normally, I try to tell you about every single morsel of food that enters my mouth….even if I just grab a handful of Raw Almonds to “tide me over”. And, this week has been no exception. But, I must make mention of one possible exception to the rule. Currently, we have what used to be 2 pounds of Wild Sockeye Smoked Salmon in the house. When I had my neighbor (and Caterer) prepare it for me, I really thought I would be the only one in the house eating it. I guess I just don’t remember a lot of 3 year olds in my neighborhood munching down on Smoked Salmon back in the day. Or, 8 year olds…..or, really, even the neighborhood young moms! So, I really thought (when I was chomping on the newly arrived Salmon the other night) that I had all the time in the world to eat it at my leisure. Well, I grabbed it out of the fridge tonight….(to cut off a bit to send with one of the nannies over to my trainer’s home for his consumption….I had thought to myself that I wasn’t going to get through this whole thing unaided. And, I really didn’t want any of this stuff to go to waste.)…..and, much to my surprise, there wasn’t hardly anything left of my 2 pounds of beautiful Sockeye. The girls had all been gnawing on it. And, what was left to me was barely going to be enough to merit hiding from them so that I could actually have a chance at enjoying a bite or two between meals throughout the day tomorrow. My point is: I may be lax in reporting when I grab a bite of the remaining Smoked Salmon over the next 24 to 48 hours. At this point, it is every man for himself around here.
Why am I so infatuated with Wild Smoked Sockeye Salmon? Well, for starters, it was not
raised in a pond-like area here in the states where it was fed its own refuse for the majority of its life….along with a bit of corn and/or grain that was thrown into its water. I don’t know about you. But, something about that scenario doesn’t make FATTY farm raised salmon appeal to me any more. But, just as importantly is the naturally occurring Omega 3 that is present in all Salmon. That is the “good fat”. And, you need it for your brain, your body, and your heart and blood vessel health. I hate to stereotype. But, have you ever heard of a Native “Real” Eskimo with heart disease? That is because it just doesn’t happen. The amount of Omega 3’s that they are putting into their body as a result of their daily diet of Wild fish prevents its possibility. Wild Fish. It does a body good. Eat some.
Okay. Back to the day. Today, I had decided that my slightly abused body could handle another run at a “Group Session” of CrossFit. And, so, at 11:30, off I went to see what kind of beating Ronnie had in store for us. Today’s workout started with a 15 minute window for each person to try to establish their 5 rep maximum for Bench Pressing. (We never bench press in CrossFit. And, I am truly horrible at Bench Press. But, even so, I was very pleased to find out that I could easily handle 185 the requisite 5 attempts….despite the fact that I haven’t laid down on a bench press bench more than twice in the last 9 months.) After that, the metabolic conditioning portion of the Workout was a bit more interesting. Try to imagine this. Walk up to a wall. Put your hands down on the ground close to the wall. Flip your feet up on to the wall into a handstand position. Now, bend your arms and touch your head to the floor. That is called a HandStand Push Up. When you re-straighten your arms to full extension, you have successfully done one of them! Today’s metabolic workout started with 21 of those…..proceeded to 21 KettleBell Swings with a 53 pound KettleBell….on to 21 box jumps at a height of 24 inches. And, then, we repeated the whole thing doing 15 reps at each station. And, the completion was the whole thing again but doing only 9 reps per station. I will just tell you that I am VERY good at Hand Stand Push Ups. And, most of the world is not. Even my fellow CrossFitters. It is a bit of an Achilles Heel for most folks. I think you can guess the rest………….
On to lunch: I barely paused before making my lunch decision. I had my book in the car
seat next to me….(my Nook, I should say)….and, I had money to spend in my pocket. To Grand Street Cafe I went. I was hoping for a bit of Wild Fish….but, I knew that the chances were not good….and, I was right. It was Chilean Sea Bass….which I love but cannot daily afford….or, nothing. So, I went for the pan sauteed shrimp and Veggie combo with which I have had so much luck in the past! And, today was no exception. And, don’t worry. I ate every single bite of every single thing that was on the plate….especially the Veggies. If you want to be Long for this World, you should do the same. Fresh Veggies. They do a body good.
Well, two or three hours of calling my potential clients on the phone….let’s not go into
the details of that….and, it was time for my belly to find its next meal. And, thanks to Nicole, it did not have long to wait. Yes. It is way too late in the day to be eating Fruit….even with $4 of Almond Butter alongside it. (Does that look like $4 of Almond Butter to you? Maybe it is $3. But, it ain’t $2….That whole jar was $16. And, it doesn’t take too many scoops to send that sucker on its way to the nearest Ripple Glass Recycling Container!) But, even though fruit is a poor late afternoon snack, I once again took a chance with my future well being….(let’s not get too worried here….take a look at my belly…take a look at your neighbor’s
belly….I think I will survive the slight glycemic spike)…..and paused to consume a good-sized portion of it. I think this snack costs about 5 bucks. Have you purchased an Organic Apple lately….? Makes you want to start a garden or Orchard, doesn’t it? (Yes. I have thought very seriously about the elimination of the swing set and its replacement with an Organic Garden. No. I am not kidding.)
Well, the day was winding down. And, the anticipation was growing. Angie had spoken the most beautiful words I could have hoped to hear earlier in the day. (I am thawing Chili.) And, my mouth was starting to
water thinking about its eventual entry into my mouth on its way to my eagerly waiting belly. As you may know, Angie cooks many things from scratch…and, I mean “scratch”. Chili is not an exception for her. She does not put anything in it that comes from a packet. Everything is fresh. And, the ingredient list is somewhere in the 25 to 30 range (of different items). It has some spice to it….although, in my opinion….not a ridiculous amount. And, as luck would have it, she purposefully made too much of it at its last brewing. And, today was the lucky day that we got to eat that which she had frozen. Before that could go down the chute, I was treated to one of her fresh organic field greens salads with organic baby tomatoes and blue cheese…and, her home made
dressing….something akin to balsamic vinaigrette. (I had wisely decided to pull something “big” from the cellar. And, I was already washing down the dinner’s early start with a glass of this 06 Petite Syrah….”EarthQuake”. If you are not a serious wine drinker, you might spit this stuff right out of your mouth. It is not tame…by any stretch. Berries with a Dark Chocolate on the finish….and, in general….a near “rude” bigness to it that is truly not for the feint of heart. I figured it was perfect for Spicy Chili with Angie! Wow. Right again, David. You are really something.)
After finishing my Chili, I knew that I was “done” for the evening. Angie still gets an urge to have the occasional bite of Dark Chocolate after her evening meals. But, quite frankly, that is because she has never tried going a week without sugar….as I have….Sugar has never been of huge importance to me. But, now, I simply do not eat things that have Sugar (of any magnitude) in them. (Fruit excepted.) And, I simply do not crave the substance at all. No chocolate for me tonight. I am drinking my water bottle, taking my Melatonin and my magnesium and a little supplemental liquid fish oil and a tad more Vitamin D3…..and, I am off to hit the rack!
Another day of Eating What I Eat in the books! Over and Out!
