TABATA. Google it. Do it. Or, do some sort of short interval, short rest training!

Today, my workout only lasted 20 minutes…start to finish.  How is that possible?  Cuz we did TABATA today.  5 Movements.  And, we did each one for 4 minutes.  The Twist?  We did 20 seconds of exercise, rested for 10 seconds.  Another 20 seconds of exercise, another 10 seconds of rest….until the 4 minutes was up on each type of movement.  You can do this with anything….running, cycling, skipping, jumping up and down, air squatting…..you get the point.  And, you will know that you got “enough” once you have completed your 20 minutes……I promise.

But, before all that excitement occurred, we had a lot of eating to do.  And, Protein Shakeas is my pattern, it all started with one of my Undenatured Whey Protein shakes (sourced from New Zealand free range dairy cows that are hormone free and anti-biotic free).  As always, I mixed a ton of Raw Almond Butter in with the chocolate and vanilla protein and some flax seed….mmmmm good.  Seriously.  Since someone had failed to make sure that there were Organic Berries in the house, I was unable to head up to the office with my traditional bowl of cut strawberries.  🙁    Instead, I grabbed the bowl of what was left of the Organic IMG_4359Pink Lady Apple that I had sliced up for Charly Kate this morning.  For some reason, she had barely touched it.  (You needn’t worry. I will watch her closer tomorrow morning.)  Anyhow, I used that for my portion of fruit for the morning and paired it with a glass of my Organic Unsweetened Iced Tea.  Another successful start to a fantastic day of eating stuff that doesn’t spike your insulin or glucose levels!

Following a bit of paperwork and computerwork, I headed back downstairs for yet another of the above-mentioned protein shakes.  (To be IMG_3870truthful, me and my belly are feeling just a little bit “off our fighting look” thanks to the rice wrapped Sushi I ate Monday and the corn starch that went into the “stir fry” that my dear wife made me last night.  To be totally truthful, the absolute ton of salt that was surely in the Hibachi from Sunday night was probably not that helpful either.  And, didn’t we have some sort of “cheat meal” Saturday night since we knew we were going to be out of town for Easter and unable to indulge in our traditional Houston’s late lunch/early dinner Sunday munch?  (The answer, as you already know, is “yes”.  We had Mexican on our Saturday night date night.)  To sum it all up, during my last 4 days of eating, I have never gone more than a day without a major unfortunate deviation from my normal low glycemic diet.  And, although you can get away with that some of the time, you CANNOT do it every single day for the better part of a week.  As a result, I am currently paying for it….and, my poor wife feels that she is too.  In short, you might be of the opinion that the belly pic that was on last night’s posting…. (the email to my mother)…… looked pretty good….(the one I sent to my mother to prove that I am not “skin and bones”.)  But, the reality is that I know that my belly skin….in that picture…..is full of water and/or something that ain’t quite right!  And, the result is not exactly what I would expect to see on the cover of “Men that are Over 45 and Fit” magazine.  With all the aforementioned in mind, I was not completely despondent when….for the first time ever….I dropped about 1/3 of my protein shake solution in the sink whilst trying to talk to my good friend on the phone at the same time I was attempting to drink it.  (I probably could do with 33% less of whatever I was about to ingest anyway.)

After doing the above-described workout, I took a couple of the guys to lunch at the Grande Street Cafe.  And, for a change, I decided to have them IMG_4072sauté some shrimp along with my traditional veggie mix (of zucchini, yellow squash, and onions).  Man.  Was that good!  Please expect to see that little entrée on many a future post!  (Almost as good as my wife’s….which is what you see pictured here cuz I forgot to take a picture.)

After lunch, I headed home and did a few hours on the phone before heading Protein Shakedownstairs for my pre-dinner caloric needs.  The whole thing about not having any berries in the house had really thrown me off for the day.  And, as a result, I just decided to do another protein shake and call the whole disaster “a tiny pimple on the beautiful face of life.”  (Let’s not let the whole deviation from the norm throw off your whole day, David!  Good gracious.)

Well, dinner time was right around the corner.  And, Angie had actually given me a little insight into what to expect.  And, I was starting to notice my Pavlovian response was getting the better of me…..that is right.  My IMG_4364mouth was actually starting to salivate.  So, after that last call of the day, I headed directly downstairs with one thing on my mind!  Upon arrival, I could see that the main course was still a ways down the road.  But, thank you.  The starter was already sitting there waiting for me.  And, alongside it, was an 08 Napa Cab that happens to be one of my personal all-time favorites.  Take a look at all the ORGANIC-ONLY goodies she put on my salad….field greens or spring mix (I don’t know the IMG_4362difference), some sweet clover and onion sprouts, aged blue cheese crumbles, baby tomatoes (I love those suckers), and Angie’s special balsamic vinagerette/honey mustard dressing (prepared by her about 20 minutes before it hit the top of my salad.)  Mmmm.  Can you honestly tell me you would rather start YOUR dinner with something else?  What the heck would that be……..a bag of chips?   Come on………….!

About 30 minutes later, the main course and veggies hit the kitchen island IMG_4365top.  (As you can see on the Mac Screen, I was actually watching the announcement of the very last workout of the CrossFit Open games.)  Wow.  Look at the “skin-on” breast of chicken that she infused with goat cheese and chives!  And, tonight, she roasted the veggies in the oven, instead of sautéing them:  squash, zucchini, and onions.  No.  That is not a coincidence.  It is a known fact that I happen to be very partial to that particular medley from the Vegetable family.  I promise you that mixing these items with your glass of properly cellared Napa Cab will result in a very very happy belly!  (I know mine sure was!)

And, I assure you of another thing.  The only thing that will be going into my belly for the remainder of the evening will be the tap water that is IMG_4079currently contained in my BPA free Camelbak Water Bottle!  (It is not that I have incredible will power.  I simply have no craving for anything but water.) And, you won’t either once your body has said goodbye to the up and down spikes and crashes of insulin and glucose levels that results from the “Standard American Diet.”
