Well, the day started about like you might guess. I have every intention to get myself downstairs in time to make a nice pretty omelet to photograph for you folks. But, Charly Kate was not in a cooperating mood. So, I only ended up having time to grab another one of my famous protein shakes. Same very healthy and very tasty ingredients as every other day: I mix 11.75 ounces of chilled water with vanilla and chocolate protein, a heaping tablespoon of Raw “Alive” Organic Almond Butter (mmmm good), another heaping tablespoon of cold pressed organic flax seed (which, by the way, has 2800 mg of Omega 3 in it), and a nice little smidgeon of honey to give the mixture a bit of sweetness. Love it………………..as usual!
After hitting the phones for a couple of hours, I looked down and saw that it was time for David’s 10:15 sustenance allocation. (Time to “Eat What David Eats”.) And, since I knew I was doing CrossFit in less than two hours, I decided to add in some fresh fruit with my second protein shake of the day. Those organic strawberries really hit the spot. So, did my protein shake!
And, I kept that unsweetened Iced Tea sitting at my desk to sip for the remainder of the morning….as I always do. As a reminder, purchase organic black tea….or, man up and purchase organic green tea. It is lower in caffeine and less processed than Black Tea. (Even organic black tea.) Watch my postings to see when David “man’s up” and makes the jump himself. In truth, it may be a little while. (I just purchased my organic black tea. And, I hate to just throw it out.) Wow. That may be a good example of “setting a bad example!” (Just because something is currently in your pantry doesn’t mean it ever needs to go in your mouth. Some of those bad items need to make their happy little ways to the trash can……..now!)
At a bit before noon, I headed for CrossFit for my “workout-instead-of-lunch” option…which I utilize quite often….and, if you think you “don’t have the time to exercise regularly”, perhaps you should consider doing the same. (In fact, perhaps you should try having triplet three year olds and an eight year old and two full-time working parents…and, the resulting VERY tight schedule where you literally schedule your bathroom breaks….and, try to work exercise into your day. Not complaining. Just saying I don’t believe you if you tell me “You don’t have time to consistently exercise.” Making the time is a choice. And, it can…….and, must……..be done.
After CrossFit, I sometimes head for Grande Street Cafe for some fresh wild fish…….but, today was not one of those days. (That would be a good option for you in case you are not feeling the magnetic pull that I felt to get home and slurp down another one of my protein shakes.) Since I had just finished working out very intensely……(as workouts should be by the way….there is no sense lollygagging around the gym for an hour or two when you can get it done in 30 minutes!)….I decided to add a Trio Bar in with my after-exercise protein shake. I gave you the link for them in a previous post. My “Life Extension” Doc eats them quite frequently to avoid a high glycemic alternative. They are crammed with nuts and seeds and (I think) some honey. Good stuff. And, all of it will quickly be absorbed by my body which is currently in its 30 to 60 minute window of “High Consumption” setting for nutrients. If you are still in that phase of your development where you are aggressively trying to lose bodyfat, I would suggest NOT loading too much into the food chute just because your body is on “high burn”. Remember, this is also your body’s best time to seriously burn some fat. So, for some folks, this might be the perfect time to just eat some fish and veggies or a protein shake and skip anything else. (You do need some protein right after a workout. But, you can probably make it without the rest of the calories if your goal is a quick farewell to some of the fat that your body has befriended over the years since the two first met……..your body and Mr. Fat, that is.)
At around 3:45 this afternoon, my belly started thinking it wanted “more”. And, “more” came in the form of some fantastic raw organic almond butter….about 1.5 tablespoons actually!….and, organic sliced apple. And, my belly told me that those two items weren’t going to cover the need it was perceiving. So, I sliced off a couple of slices off the end of the Colby Jack Cheese brick that is always in our fridge. (It is a miracle that Charly Kate did not turn into a Colby Jack Cheese brick when she was a younger child….as much of it as she ate every day!) Please don’t load your plate high with cheese. It is not exactly Paleo. But, the Primal BruePrint Author says he “eats it in moderation”. I think he would prefer that you were eating aged cheeses…since they are less processed. And, for sure, let’s not whip open an individually plastic wrapped slice of Kraft’s American “Cheese”….and, I use the term “Cheese” loosely in that specific instance. But, I think the Colby Jack that your local farmer produces and brings to the store may be okay as a quick substitute that you eat one of two days per week in a very limited quantity. (Even still, please make a mental note: Aged Cheese is better. And, it is not hard to find. You just have to buy some at the organic food marketplace that is closest to you. Do it!) I polished the meal off with some more unsweetened iced tea. Water would do the trick also.
As I looked up from my computer induced trance to start to contemplate the end of my work day, my very good friend, Fred Woodward walked right into my office door. I had nearly forgotten….not really Fred….that he was coming for the evening. Sadly, Charly Kate was not feeling well. So, Fred and I grabbed the triplets and headed for Grand Street Cafe (while CKC stayed home with the nanny.) As you can see in the slightly odd looking pic….(I took it on “Panorama mode” on my I-Phone and was unable to get the subjects to remain frozen during the photographing period), the triplets are very used to a bit of “fine dining” with the fancy white tablecloths, etc. I will admit that the hostesses always have an odd look on their face when they realize that dad is here alone with all these girls. But, they get over it. And, Fred and I had a wonderful meal
with the girls. We ate roasted chicken with green beans and squash and zucchini and onions (the latter veggies were, of course, sauteed in Olive Oil and Real Butter!) Oh. And, we washed it all down with a fantastic glass of “The Riddler” Meritage Red Wine. Not only does the red wine really hit the spot…but, it also happens to be a fantastic end-of-the-day anti-oxidant. (And, I love to relax with a bit of it with just about every evening meal. By the way, a “Bit” could be better defined by “about 1.5 short fill glasses of it”………NOT half a bottle!)
Now, for the odds and ends: After returning home, I gave Charly Kate her carryout dinner from Grand Street. After she finished, I couldn’t help but notice that she had hardly touched the French Green Beans….how do you spell those suckers?……And, in that I love them, I decided it would be a good idea for me to eat about 6 or 7 of the ones left on her plate. (Remember, you can basically eat an infinite amount of veggies without an impact to your waistline. So, anytime you want some, grab em.)
And, following that……much later in the evening…..when my lovely wife finally returned from her very long day on the road selling……I was treated to about 4 or 5 brussel sprouts that she did not eat. Please notice how they are browned on at least one side. Brussel sprouts are awesome WHEN COOKED PROPERLY! I guarantee you that you cannot find a toddler that would not love Brussel Sprouts that were cooked by my lovely wife……….or, by you, if you would do it correctly! Coconut oil, real butter, sea salt, brussel sprouts, and a pan….put them all together until you see that the brussel sprouts are partially browned like mine. .And, you will have total happiness!
Oh. And, after that, my all-time favorite wind down drink……….water……..in David’s favorite Camelbak water dispensing container. Just do it!
Hope you guys enjoyed another day of Just Eating What I Eat. I know I did.
