I rolled out of bed this morning knowing that I was meeting Kevin up at Skys the Limit for a bit of early part of the day CrossFitting. So, before I headed up there to see what he had in store for me, I thought it might be wise to ingest one of my famous Protein Shakes about an hour before I knew we were going to get started. Mmmmm. Absolutely perfect….as always!
Kevin and I spent a good portion of the session working on Squat Snatching. As you can see in the pic, you grab a loaded barbell and attempt to throw it over your head and squat down under it. Although I am not catching quite as much as the guys that you may have seen in the olympic games, I do like the movement….something I could not even come close to honestly saying 6 months ago! After the strength portion of our session, we did a fun little metabolic conditioning workout that came very close to making me puke. Great way to start the day. A little heavy load bearing activity….and, some very high intensity, short duration metabolic conditioning. (In this case, it was kettle bell snatches, Wall Balls, and Ring Pushups….Yes. Like gymnast ring pushups. Your feet are on the floor. Your hands are in some gymnast rings about 5 feet away that are hanging down about 4 inches off the floor. I can crank out a lot of pushups. So, Kevin decided to throw a little wrinkle in there to make them harder. Nice. I like to describe the metabolic conditioning portion of a CrossFit workout as “you run around like a chicken with your head cut off grabbing weights or throwing or snatching them until between 7 and 20 minutes runs off the clock”. Today, it was about 9.5 minutes of fairly serious discomfort.)
Well, I headed on home in a somewhat delirious state. But, not so nutty that I failed to remember that I needed to get some good stuff in my belly at the fat end of my currently “open” Glycogenic Window. I really tried to make myself eat some organic berries with my Protein Shake . But, I just could not do it. (Sometimes, a bit of serious metabolic conditioning can make one a bit nauseous. And, today proved to be one of those occasions.) All I could get my brain to agree to ingest was the shake. And, boy. Did it hit the spot! Whatever you do, make sure you get some protein in your belly after your exercise.
After the morning had worn itself out, I started realizing that I needed to get up and head for somewhere that they were likely to have something fresh and hot with which to gladden my belly. I had lunched at Kona on Saturday. So, I decided that I would head for Grande Street Cafe Today. Well, they didn’t have any fresh (wild) fish to feed to me….unless I was feeling rich enough to spring for Chilean Sea Bass. (That stuff is a little slice of heaven. But, if I ate it every day for lunch….at $29….I might not be living in my same home by year’s end.) So, a compromise had to be reached. And, today’s compromise was the world’s best Oven Roasted Chicken paired with sautéed Yellow Squash, Zucchini, and Onions. I washed it all down with some Unsweetened Iced Tea and about 30 pages of my current book. Was the Sandwich that you ate for your lunch…and, french fries…..truly better? ………Come on. Eat What I Eat. Your belly and your body will thank you later…….!
As you can probably guess, I began to feel the slight edge of imagined hunger pains at about 3 something this afternoon. As luck would have it, Nicole agreed to bring me up a plate of Organic Pink Lady Apple Slices paired with a TON of Raw Organic Almond Butter (into which I planned to dip the apple slices.) This all paired nicely with what was left of the Organic Unsweetened Iced Tea that I had taken with me up to the office on my way back from the lunch outing that I described above.
My lovely wife had had a hard day in the old sales bull pen. And, she really hadn’t made it too far on the meal planning program for the evening by the time I reached the kitchen this evening and started looking around for dinner. I tried waylaying my thoughts of food with a handful of Raw almonds. (Hah. You thought you would catch me eating more of the Roasted ones. Think again. Those buggers aren’t going in this body again for a long long time.) But, although the raw almonds were good, they were not up to the task of checking my brain’s decision that it was ready to eat its dinner.
No worries. As it happened, Angie had made a double portion of the salads and the coconut sautéed shrimp from yesterday. And, it was all sitting smartly in the fridge just waiting for us to take another run at it tonight. All that was left was to beg her to sauté some of her famous Organic French Haricot Verts Green Beans. And, we would be in
business. And, that is exactly what she did. Everything mentioned paired nicely with the 2007 Freemark Abbey Merlot that I had just opened. And, once again, my belly was happy and full…..although NEVER bloated. HOW IS THAT FOR “LEFTOVERS”????!!!!!
And, please rest assured that I knew that nothing else would be tempting these lips again this evening except my trusty Old Friend, Mr. BPA Free Camelbak Water Bottle.
Another day of Eating What David Eats.
Over and Out.
