Another Saturday Morning Cycling Extravaganza. I know that 2 hours on the bike is not exactly “Short, Intense, High Energy” Exercise…..but, I do so love to do it!

I used to think that riding my road racing bicycle less than 4 days per week was akin to asking for a complete fitness disaster.  That was then.  This is now.  Ever since starting CrossFit in late August of last year, I have only been cycling one day per week.  And, SONY DSCamazingly, my level of cycling fitness doesn’t seem to have really reduced to any degree that I personally can measure.  That is hard to believe…for me.  And, for my cycling friends.  (Most of my buddies are putting in a minimum of 5 days per week on the bike.)  I cannot help but attribute this unusual phenomenon to the stuff that I do the other 6 days of the week.  In all fairness, I think that my little informal “test” has….without a doubt for me…..proven that you can stay “uber” fit without spending a gazillion hours per week doing low intensity endurance training.  Short, strong bursts done using big blocks of your energy with extremely high intensity….but, for a relatively short period of time….are the thing to which your body (my body) will best respond.  You will get fitter AND healthier (and be sexier looking now….and, later in your life) from short “burst” training than you ever will be by employing hours of “marathon speed” old-style fitness.  (I guess I should have figured marathoner_sprinter2that out long ago by just looking around me at my “Uber” fit cyclist buddies.  In truth, they could all cycle 99.999% of their fellow human beings into the ground.  But, that doesn’t mean you would want their body as a replacement for your own on the days that you intend to be seen in your swimming suit this summer……!  For showing up at the pool, I think we can all agree that we would rather have a body that looks like an Olympic Sprinter….not the guy who won the New York Marathon this year.  With that in mind, whose training regimen should YOU employ?)

Why all the talk about cycling?  Cuz this morning was my ONE day on the bike for this week.  And, after last week’s cycling “nutrition debacle”, I had made some decisions earlier this week….you may have read the email exchange between me and my “Age Management” doctor on this topic…that were going to impact exactly what kind of calories I would be ingesting immediately before, during, and after my two hours of old-style endurance training with my buddies.  First off, what the heck am I doing out there doing nearly 2 hours on the bike anyway?  Didn’t we just cover this topic in the previous paragraph?  Well, as I explained to my Doctor:  I like riding my bike!  Especially with my buddies!  And, barring some change that I cannot currently foresee, I intend to keep doing it for the rest of my life.  I am not really doing it for “my health”….cuz I don’t really think it is that physically healthy compared to the other types of fitness that I employ.  (Yoga and CrossFit.)  But, doing things for your “enjoyment” is healthy also…….healthy for your mental well-being.  And, that is why I was out on my bike this morning.

So, what did I eat? Well, I started the day with my traditional Protein Shake mixture…..all the regular stuff.  Like last week, I was hoping that some of the fat in the 20130519-192349.jpgalmond butter and cashew butter would be sitting in my belly slowly burning (like a slow-burning log in a mostly closed wood-burning stove.)  But, from last week’s little test, I knew that was not going to be enough.  So, I brought with me one of those new Cliff Bars Mojo Sweet and Salty Bars….as well as an Isagenix Protein Bar to follow it as additional post-ride nutrition.  For during the ride, I had brought along my good old friend, Hammer Gel.  hjhIt has real fruit in it.  And, it is gluten free.  Last week, I had tried to ride without Hammer Gel for the first time ever……for fear of its potential Glycemic impact in my internal environment.  But, this week, I had the good sense to realize that riding without it….especially for someone who keeps their blood sugar/insulin level so incredibly low in the first place….was darn close to suicidal.  (And, in fact, after last week’s ride, I bet I was very near a dangerous blood insulin/glucose level.  After realizing how low my blood sugar had actually dropped, I spent a serious hour or so of stuffing my face  just to get myself back to feeling relatively normal.  And, it really took me well past the weekend and into the beginning of the next week to really start to feel totally normal.)  Anyhow, as I have always done while riding, I started putting back a strong pull on the Hammer Gel at about the 40 minute mark after the ride’s start.  And, following that, I kept on ingesting more at about 20 minute intervals.  I know the stuff is pretty highly glycemic….even though it promises to be “slow releasing”.  But, I also know that (at that level of prolonged energy release) your body is very quickly utilizing that glucose…probably just as fast as you are ingesting it.  And, I wouldn’t be surprised if, at ride’s end……even after ingesting all that Hammer Gel….your body insulin/glucose levels wouldn’t look that images-13much different than when you started.  And, as I said, I did quickly chomp down the Cliff bar for some more blood glucose level bumping (up)….and, then, the Isagenix bar….all within about 10 minutes of getting off my bicycle.  And, unlike last week, I felt “right as rain” 35 minutes later when I was sitting court-side IMG_4953watching my 8 year old at her weekly tennis lesson!  And, I really don’t think I asserted much undue torture (oxidative stress) on my internal organs from the morning’s activities and unusual (for me) caloric intake.

After Charly Kate’s Tennis lesson, my wife and I headed for Grand Street to get back on a “normal” track of nutrition that did not have anything in it that would spike our insulin/glucose levels.  As you can 20130519-192324.jpgsee, I ordered a huge serving of Braised Short Ribs with all the Au Jus going over the top of all the Pan Sauteed Zucchini and Squash that I ordered with them.  For the nine millionth time, I cannot help but stopping to comment again:  I truly love the fact that eating Low Glycemic got me to quit eating starchy stuff.  If not, I would have never figured out that I actually prefer (by a long shot) veggies over potatoes, pasta, and rice.  I LOVE them.  And, especially when they are cooked in a bit of olive oil and real butter.  (Oh.  And, Some Sea Salt for good measure….)  Another great Low Glycemic Lunch and on to the rest of our day.

My brother and his family were coming over for a Low Glycemic Dinner.  (Actually, any guests that come to my home are coming for a Low Glycemic Dinner…..they just don’t always realize it…..before or after their arrival and departure most times.)  But, I knew I wasn’t going to make it to that dinner without something to bridge the time gap between now and then….(Doug and Company were supposed to arrive around 6 pm.  But, in my memory, Doug and crew are never less than 40 minutes late.  So, dinner’s start promised to be a pretty good notch later than our “usual”.)   God only knows how many calories I 20130519-192335.jpgburned on the bike doing short intense intervals for two hours.  But, my guess would be about 1,200.  So, I was really running short on the balance of In and Out for the day.  And, I knew just the thing!  How about 700 calories from one of Super David’s protein shake concoctions to save the afternoon and help us all get ready for whatever my lovely wife was preparing us all for our late dinner.  Perfect!

Dinner finally arrived.  And, we all enjoyed our IMG_5256Organic Girls Salads with Angie’s special (from scratch) Basil dressing.  (Doug actually had two dinner-sized salads all to himself.)  And, the happiness didn’t end when our entrée for the evening…..maple 1201p130-maple-mustard-glazed-chicken-lglazed pan roasted chicken (finished in the oven) finally hit our

plates!   I washed it all down with a big glass of the 06 EarthQuake Petite Syrah that I had opened the night previous.  And, I promise you that no part of me was wishing that we had ordered anything that might be brought to the door by a restaurant delivery driver!

I spent the rest of the evening bonding with my BPA free Camelbak water bottle….and, IMG_4079my brother and his family.  What my wife and I did not do…..and, nor did my brother since he also Eats What David Eats….was go looking for anything else to cram into our pie holes before time to hit the rack.  (And, neither of us WANTED anything else either.  We weren’t sacrificing.  We just had no further food craving.  Eat like we eat and YOU won’t either!)

Another successful day Just Eating What David Eats…………Over and Out!
