Well, on Mondays, I have swapped from doing Group CrossFit Training (at Sky’s the Limit) with the organized noon session …….for Private Training in the mornings alone with one of the trainers……(Kevin Kelley.) I am loving it. As you probably know by know, CrossFit sessions don’t last as long as most of us are used to spending in an exercise session at our traditional gym. After some mobility exercises and warm-up, you can pretty much count on being done (and exhausted) within about 30 to 40 minutes of start to finish. The first roughly 15 to 25 minutes is the strength portion of the workout. The last 4 to 12 minutes is the metabolic conditioning portion of the workout. (On a bad day, this portion can be much much longer. If you come to CrossFit, you will see what I mean.) Anyhow, today, Kevin and I spent the strength portion of the day on Snatching again. (By the way, the photo provided is a file photo. That is NOT me.) As mentioned previously, Snatching provides a full body workout which really does not isolate any particular muscle….most of CrossFit is this way. The movements are multi-dimensional movements that are multi-muscular in their usage. I don’t know if those are the correct terms. But, I think you get the picture. Anyhow, if Kevin has his way, I am going to become an Olympic Snatching Champion….at least in CrossFit terms. (CrossFitters are not likely to beat a true Snatching Specialist. CrossFitting is about being good at a lot of things…not about being the best at any one thing….to be accurate, it is about being the best at being well-rounded athletically.) After the snatching, we did 4 rounds of Back Squats, Burpees, and Hollow Rockers (core work rocking). The strength portion of the workout took about 18 to 20 minutes. The metabolic conditioning portion of the workout took 8 minutes and 30 seconds….roughly. Over and out in less than 20 minutes….not counting warmup, of course….and, I promise you. I was “done”…..I mean “stick a fork in you” kind of “done”. That is CrossFit. That is “short duration, high intensity” training. And, you should be doing something that approximates this at least two days per week of your exercise regimen.
Enough about CrossFit. What about eating for the day? Well, knowing that I had CrossFit training at 8:15 am, I knew I had to get my protein shake into the belly as soon as possible upon awakening. Now, this is not some sort of rule that I have read about….it is just that I don’t like liquids sloshing around in me when I am running around and/or exercising in any capacity. So, at 7:15 am, the first protein shake of the day was down the hatch. Nothing with it. I probably should have grabbed a few berries to go along with it…..the morning is the time to get your berries in your belly. Remember, fruit does have natural sugar (read glycemic spike) in it. And, the earlier in your day that you ingest it, the better. You do need it in your diet….if for no other reason than its natural anti-oxidative qualities….so, skipping an opportunity to eat it is probably not the wisest course of action. Note to self: Eat Fruit with your protein shake from this point forth when going to CrossFit early in the mornings.
Upon return from CrossFit, it was time to get busy taking advantage of my “Glycogenic Window”….the time immediately following vigorous exercise during which your body is best able to assimilate protein and other nutrition more than any other time of the day. And, that is exactly what I did: I was a little bit nauseated. And, I just didn’t think I could throw down my 2nd Protein Shake of the Day….so, I grabbed the big Bowl of Strawberries that Nicole had just given Henley…..(much to her chagrin, I might add….Henley, that is…the girls LOVE berries)…..and, a Trio Seed and Nut bar and an Isagenix (Low Glycemic) Undenatured Protein bar and headed upstairs to quietly enjoy my “post workout feast”! Wow. That hit the shot. And, yes. There were much more strawberries than that when I started. I washed it all down with my favorite Unsweetened Organic Iced Tea………….Perfect!
As the day neared the noon hour, I started thinking about lunch. And, in truth, when I left the house, it was my intention to head for McCormick’s and take another run at their Wild Corvina. But, as I headed towards our Country Club Plaza, my car started feeling the magnetic pull of the Grande Street Cafe….even though I knew that there was almost zero chance of finding any fresh fish there….(they almost never have it on Mondays unless you are willing/financially able to spring for the Chilean Sea Bass. And, since I had eaten that yesterday at this very same restaurant, I knew I was not springing for it again today.) Even so, I love coziness. And, I knew that my spot at the bar would be a nice private location to enjoy my book and probably get something that would be both fantastic and fantastic for my belly. And, I was not disappointed….well, a little bit, I guess. (Just as I was ordering the Pork Chop, one of the managers walked by shouting: “We are out of the Chop!”) Anyhow, I ate the oven roasted chicken….as I have done a million times in the past….and, paired it with some pan sautéed veggies….zucchini, squash, and onions! Perfect. Tea to go…..and, another perfect lunch of Eating What David Eats was “in the Books!”
As the day wore on, I saw my lovely wife passing by my open office doorway with some Organic Pink apple slices and almond butter. As you can imagine, that got me to thinking about some of the same for my belly. And, as the 4 pm hour drew near, here they came on a plate….masterfully prepared in one of my pretty circles by Nicole….and, all centered around a heaping container of Artisana Raw Organic Almond Butter. Mmmmm good.
Well, that went down very well. And, it got me through to the dinner hour. And, today was the day that I was going to be eating my first taste (to the best of my memory) of Free Range Hamburger. As you know, I have a habit of showing up at the Grand Street Cafe a fair amount each week. But, I rarely seem to get there on Saturdays for lunch. Evidently, that has been a big mistake. Every other Saturday, Rick is serving Free Range Beef Hamburgers as a Menu Option. (Call ahead if you are wondering. I don’t want to promise you something that may or may not be there when you arrive.) Anyhow, he sent me home with a bit of this delicious stuff. (Evidently, he procured it from Grassy Pants Meat in Miller, Missouri. And, they must be very serious about free range, hormone free, anti-biotic free cattle.) May I just say that this was the best hamburger I have eaten in my entire life. Period. As mentioned previously, I don’t know that I have eaten a “Free Range” hamburger in my lifetime. I certainly was shocked by how much more I enjoyed it than the 9 million burgers I had eaten before it. (In truth, I had pretty average to low expectations. I mean, it is hamburger. What’s the big deal?) Was i wrong!! I cooked it on the outside grill
and loaded it up with a slice of organic Colby jack cheese from trader Joe’s…two pieces of pan sautéed free range bacon…some organic peanut butter….(Yes. You read that right……try it before you snicker)..a little Hellman’s mayo….and a bunch of Bibb lettuce on the upper and lower outside layers (to act as “the bun”.) I have to say that I savored every bite. And, if I had enough of the meat (my beautiful wife stole the other one I cooked), I could have eaten three of them! No joke. As most of my friends know, my weekly cheat meal (forever) has been a Sunday afternoon siesta (with only my wife) that starts with some Spinach Dip and ends with a bacon cheese burger with fries. But, unless they are going to stock Grassy Pants Free Range
meat going forward, that tradition is in serious danger of meeting its demise! Get some! Or, come to Grande Street every other Saturday. And, Rick’s folks will make one for you! (In case you are wondering, I did have the remainder (shared with Angie) of that 05 Napa Cab we opened last night. And, yes. It paired perfectly with that Free Range Hamburger! 🙂
To finish the day: I really thought I would probably eat something else in addition to that hamburger. But, in truth, beef is pretty filling. And, I just didn’t feel the urge for anything else for the remainder of the night.
Of course, I did keep my trusty water bottle (Camelbak) by my side. That was all I needed.
