Sunday is Our “Cheat Meal Day”. (Please note: I did NOT say “Cheat Day”. I said “Cheat Meal Day”….as in ONE cheat meal….NOT a bunch of them!) Truth be told, we love what eat in our “non-cheat” meals. But, this little tradition is one we hold dear to our hearts. So, we still head for Houston’s every Sunday afternoon after Yoga for a little Glycemic Spike. And, today was no exception.

Sunday is our day to hang with the girls and just take it as it comes.  Today was no exception. 04 06 MorningAfter awakening to the hollering triplets….and, after getting them settled with that which they wanted for their first partial meal of the day…..I loaded myself up a Protein Shake in the old shaker cup, slammed every fantastic bit of it down into the belly, and started looking for some strawberries to finish off the morning’s repast.  Does that all sound real familiar to you?  If I love it….and, I assure you that I do….why does it seem to throw people over their mental edge of sanity and reason to hear that I eat it nearly every single day?  I would have to argue that it is because they have not tried to make one that they actually enjoy drinking.  And, I bet you a million dollars that I am right.  If you want something else, as always, I would suggest an omelette with a bunch of veggies all cooked in Real butter and served with your choice of berries alongside it.  If you cannot stand eggs….wow….you really have a problem…but, if you cannot stand them, you need to figure out a protein source (that is healthy and organic and/or free range) that 04 06 at 8 thirty amworks for you.  And, you need to pair it with an organic fruit source that also works for you.  (Note:  It would be hard to argue that berries….and, their anti-oxidative miracle qualities…are not the best source of fruit.  I do suggest that, at least for your morning starter, you do choose something from the berry family.)  As a reminder, my daughter chooses free range sausage sourced from wild game.  If your palate will allow you to get excited about that on some (or all) of your morning wakeups, please feel free to do the same.  But, I will tell you that, in my humble opinion, figuring out a healthy protein shake mixture for your morning’s repast (that includes organic flax seed and raw organic almond butter with protein that is sourced solely from free range cattle which happen to be hormone free and antibiotic free) may be the easiest way for most of you to get the protein you need in a manner which will be the most agreeable to you and your taste buds each morning of your life.  Just my opinion.  So, there you have it.  (Eggs would be the next closest option that I think most of you could eat on most days for the rest of your life.)

I don’t normally skip my mid-morning caloric opportunity.  But, I knew my dad was on his way here to “make us hamburgers”.  And, I also knew that the only exercise that was going to happen for my body for the day was some late afternoon “Yoga for Athletes”  (with Sharon Prothe of Element Fitness in Brookside).  So, I did just that.  I “fasted” for the whole 3.5 hour period between my morning repast and the time at which I started eating the grilled shrimp that I substituted for the hamburgers my dear old dad had grilled for the girls.  Although I could have had Dad’s hamburgers represent my “weekly cheat meal”, I knew that my lovely wife and I would be having that meal immediately following our aforementioned Yoga event. And, sorry dad.  But, I just felt that the smart gamble was on the fare at Houston’s being even IMG_4421better than your World Famous Hamburgers.  But, please don’t get too worried.  I think my lunch meal was pretty darn good.  And, unless you are nuts, you probably will too.  As you can see, my wife had thrown together some organic mixed greens, baby tomatoes, and aged blue cheese crumbles underneath her special Angie-Secret Dressing.  And, she had paired that with some shrimp sauteed in Real Butter, coconut oil, and sea salt….which just happened to have some French Haricot Verts Green Beans sitting next to it.  Wow.  I honestly don’t know which was my favorite!  And, you wouldn’t either if you had eaten what I ate for lunch today!  By the way, Dad took a chance with his blood sugar levels by intentionally spiking them with a Boulevard Wheat Beer.  I decided to take a slightly more prudent course of action and washed my lunch down the tube with a glass of Organic Unsweetened Iced Tea.  (Why organic tea?  Well, how many times have you read about the purported anti-oxidative qualities of tea?  If you read anything about your health, I would guess the answer to that question is “a lot”.  Well, please flush everything you have read down the toilet if the only tea you are drinking is Lipton.  I won’t say the stuff doesn’t taste good.  But, after all the processing it has seen in its brutal lifetime, there is really nothing left in there that any sane nutritionist would even mildly contemplate as anti-oxidative.  The less processed, the better.…even with your tea choices.  Green tea would actually be better than black.  And, white tea is the best of all three.  Don’t drink flavored teas.  I assure you that there is nothing that your belly needs that can be found in a glass of any kind of tea that is flavored.)

Well, after the day was nearly gone, we did indeed head down to our Yoga Class.  Our girls were napping.  And, we needed a bit of unwind from the week’s load bearing workouts.  We go to Yoga specifically for athletes.  And, its basis and focus are more directed toward stretching and healing and strengthening of all the parts of the body so you will be less likely to get injured during your load bearing exercise days.  I strongly suggest that you work towards finding a similar class for yourself.

Yoga gets over at 5 pm on Sundays.  And, our minds are pretty much tuned to be sitting together (without kids or joiners) at about 5:15 pm at Houston’s Restaurant on the Country IMG_4429Club Plaza.   And, today was no exception.  As I mentioned in the title of this posting, we typically eat our one “Cheat Meal” of the week on Sunday afternoons after Yoga.  As I also mentioned in the title, we do NOT make a whole cheat day of it….nor would I suggest that you get carried away with “Cheat Meals” above and beyond the ONE…..especially if your belly is not yet and exactly vertical-only affair.  (Hint:  If it still has a slight slope in it that moves outward from the bottom of your rib cage to the top of your jeans, that would not be considered a “vertical-only affair”. )  But, I do encourage you to take one “cheat meal” per week if you are so inclined.  The truth is that I am not sure that IMG_4430Angie and I really NEED the cheat meal so much as we just enjoy that allotted time together….and, kidless….to wind down from the week and get ready for another.  Truth be told, I think Angie would agree that what we had for lunch was better than what we ate at Houston’s!  (And, I am not impugning the food at Houston’s.  It is just that those fresh shrimp and French green beans were REALLY good!)  We took our time….as always….at Houston’s.  And, we didn’t walk out of there until about 6:23 pm….just in time to get home and relieve the nanny and finish the evening with our beauties.  (We were bad parents again and let them all stay up quite late …..past anything resembling a responsible bedtime.)

After putting that last morsel of food in my mouth at Houston’s, nothing else but water passed my lips for the remainder of the evening.  And, please rest assured that it was not
IMG_4219because I am a pillar of restraint………I am not.  The truth is that I wanted for nothing.  My insulin and blood sugar levels are almost always flat as a board…….the meal at Houston’s excepting of course…..and, I just don’t feel cravings at night like I have for the last 30 or so years of my life.  The only thing I wanted was my friendly Camelbak water bottle.  And, that is all I got.

Another week of Eating What David Eats in the bag.

See you Monday.
