Another Morning with Carl…..Genius Gymnastic CrossFit Guru. And, Another Day of Eating What David Eats. Follow my lead…..?

As is my current usual on Tuesdays, I rolled out of bed 39 minutes early this morning.  (6:00 AM to be exact.)  Why?  So, I could drive all the way OUT of our fine city and out to Grain Valley, Missouri to meet with the owner of Cerberus CrossFit.  Why am I driving all the way out there for personal training on the days that I don’t meet with my trainer at my local CrossFit gym, Kevin Kelley…?  Well.  Simple.  Carl’s background is in gymnastics….about a hundred years of it before getting CrossFit certified about 3 years ago.  And, I need to get better at the activities in CrossFit that involve base motor skill stuff that I guess I missed as a kid….?  Hand Stand Push Ups were the main focus this morning (since we decided to take a day’s break from Kipping Pullups.  I think I kind of have a shaky semi-decent handle on those actually…thanks to many weeks with Carl.)  You might want to google “CrossFit Hand Stand Push Ups” before you get too much farther into this post.   If the majority of the members of my local CrossFit gym can do one, would it be too far of a stretch for you to believe that, perhaps, you might want to get yourself to a point where YOU can do one too?  At what point did you decide you were “too old” for nearly everything?  Are you really too old…..or, just too inflexible….or, dare I say it, too lazy?  Tip:  You would be best served to start the trying part of this endeavor with just hand stands against the wall…..no pushup until later down the road.  At first, just holding yourself against the wall in a handstand for 10 seconds at a time can be a challenge….and, a strength builder all into itself.  A few months ago, I remember observing one of the new CrossFitters in the gym for a lunch workout.  (Folks who are brand new to CrossFit are called “on rampers” cuz they have to attend an “onramp” course of 4 separate lessons before they are allowed to jump into regular workouts with the rest of us.)  She was the opposite of a “picture of fitness.”  I would guess she had spent very little of her life anywhere near a gym and/or following any kind of health conscious diet.  And, I would guess her around 57 years old….with the overweight and overaged body of a 67 year old.  But, one thing she did have was a freaking ton of determination.  That day, we were doing Hand Stand Push Ups.  If you couldn’t do the real thing, you were supposed to CarlHSPU1.baeef534do Hand Stand Holds against the wall in 30 second increments.  If you could not do that, you were supposed to put your hands out farther from the wall.  So, you were effectively doing a diagonal Hand Stand Hold against the wall.  That was all this gal could do….but, she was doing it with all her might.  And, I correctly assessed that she would be doing Hand Stand Push ups (the real thing) in her not-too-distant future.  Is that the kind of person you are?  Or, are you the one that keeps on giving up on a little of what is “okay” for you to be able to do….and, then a little bit more….and, a little bit more….and, so on….and, guess what?  You are right.  After a while, the statement that “This is all just part of getting older” becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.  …………Your choice……..!  I am going to choose to keep doing like that On Ramper did for as long as I am able ….and will keep on trying to “be able” for as long as this body is willing to strive to be so.  (If you are still able to move the slightest muscle on your frame, it is not too late for you to adopt that same philosophy.  Just do it!)

But, prior to heading out to rural Missouri, I had to grab some sustenance.  And, I didn’t even pause before deciding that that sustenance was going to happen in the form of my all-time favorite Protein Shake 20130519-192349.jpgMixture.  Undenatured Whey Protein (Vanilla) sourced from Grass Fed New Zealand Dairy Cattle (hormone free/antibiotic free), a bit of the Meal Replacement Protein from the same cows (Chocolate), Organic Raw Flax Seed (a ton of it), Organic Raw Cinnamon Powder (you won’t believe the difference between this stuff and that which is in your spice rack!), locally sourced Bee Pollen, locally  sourced honey, Raw Organic Almond Butter, and Raw Organic Cashew Butter.  Now, that is a shake!  Almost 700 calories and 40 minutes to digest it before we get started with the day’s workout!  Yes.  I know I should have grabbed some Organic Berries for the drive.  But, I am really down to the seconds at that point.  And, I always feel the magnetic pull of the car telling me to get my bum out there and step on it.  No berries today…….

Following the workout, I was supposed to eat the Isagenix Protein Bar that I had thrown in the car seat next to me for just that purpose.  I cannot believe that I actually IMG_5289remembered to take the protein bar with me and then forgot to eat it.  But, that is exactly what I did!  So, by the time I got all the way home and realized it, I decided that I might as well wait until after my shower and a little work to ingest my 2nd protein shake of the day.  In truth, I had missed my glycogenic window….again.  And, I might as well set the timing of my shake’s ingestion to my “I’m Hungry” meter instead of worrying about the benefits of the lost Glycogenic Window.  I followed the shake with some of my Unsweetened Organic Iced Tea and headed on back to finish my morning’s work activities.

Lunch:  Well, I wanted to finish the end of my current Robert Parker Jesse Stone book at lunch.  So, I avoided any contact with anyone that might wish to join me.  And, even though I knew there would likely be no fish special on a Tuesday at Grand Street, that is exactly the destination to which I pointed the front of my car.  I knew I could likely find a comfy bar stool at the end of the counter and peacefully dig into my Nook Reader and whatever they were cooking up for me.  As it happened, 20130521-204027.jpgPam did hit gold back there with the Chefs and returned with the news that they did have a piece of Snapper back there with David’s name on it.  (Just one of the benefits of eating in the same 2 or 3 restaurants almost every day of your life.  I was going to be the only one in the joint eating Pan Sauteed Snapper as my lunch there today!)  And, oh boy.  Was it tasty?  I really think that Snapper is my favorite fish.  It always seems to cook up super flaky….and, it seems like the least attentive chef can always send it out super crispy on the outside….. yet not overcooked on the inside.  And, Pam had them Saute some Mushrooms, Zucchini, and Squash as the accompaniment.  Everything was Sautéed in a bit of  Olive Oil and Butter….but, I think they forgot the Salt.  Actually, I think that people get  their own idea of what “that healthy nutcase out there at the counter” thinks of as healthy……and, they start designing my food for me…..even contrary to my specific instruction.  As a result, there was almost no butter on today’s sauté….and, if I were a betting man (which I am not), I would guess that there was NO salt!  Two Food Faux Paus (in my humble opinion.)  And, don’t worry.  I will politely correct them tomorrow…….!       🙂

Following lunch, I did a few more hours on the phone with potential clients and started finding myself getting a little bit hungry again.  In fact, I think I started hearing my stomach rumbling.  (What causes that anyway?)  Regardless of the reason, I knew that it 20130521-204047.jpgwas time to head on down to the kitchen and whip myself up a midday snack.  I would have loved to slam down yet another of my Protein Shakes….but, I knew that you all would be griping about my complete omission of fruit in today’s nutritional plan.  So, instead, I went for an Organic Pink Lady Apple sliced up perfectly for dipping in about 2.5 Tablespoons of Raw Organic Almond Butter from the folks at Artisana.  (I had actually thought of cutting back the amount of almond butter I eat in a day’s time….just for summer time….in an effort to address the inner grumblings created by my own vanity issues….You know.  Lose that last “little bit” for the swim suit crowd.  But, today was the first day that I was supposed to make the “cut”.  And, I don’t remember one of my dosings of Almond Butter that got any smaller than the norm in anything I ate today.  Maybe the swims suit crowd is just going to have to love me as I am?  I will think on it some more tomorrow.)

20130521-204035.jpgDinner time!  Is there really any better time of day?  Time to head downstairs and see 20130521-204105.jpgwhat my lovely wife is preparing for my Evening’s Healthy Fare.  (Take a look at that pic of my wife there.  Even through her long sleeve shirt, you can see that she is fit as a fiddle from head to toe.  Eat What We Eat and You Will Be Too!)  Anyhow, what were we having for dinner?  Well, you may remember the maple glazed chicken breast from the other 20130521-204116.jpgnight….and, the coconut sauteed shrimp from last night?  She re-sauteed them both as well as some Pan Sauteed sliced onions and some oven roasted Zucchini.  And, she prepared another one of those Organic Girls Baby Kale 20130521-204127.jpgSalads with all the fixings from last night for us to eat before we got started on all the hot stuff.  Since the remainder of the bottle from last night was gone, I enacted 20130521-204137.jpgmy plan to open the first bottle of the case of ’99 York Creek Meritage that had been languishing in the cellar.  Everything about the dinner was a perfect 10.  With the exception of the wine.  I must admit that it presented a bit like a French Bordeaux to me…..and, in truth, that is not really exactly my style.  But, my lovely wife loved it.  And, once I got a couple of bites of my dinner in me, I 20130521-204146.jpgcould have been happy with the 2011 Kendall Jackson Coastal Merlot.  So, I guess all was well that ended well.

I bet you can guess what I am drinking as I type this.  IMG_5269And, I hope you will do the same.  All that you need after dinner is your BPA Free Water Bottle …..and, the tap water and ice that came out of the faucet there at your sink.

Another day of Just Eating What I Eat……………Over and Out.   🙂
