Are you one of those folks who really “Falls off the Wagon” when you are on Vacation??

That is correct.  I took a little break from my food diary during our recent trip to Sun Valley Idaho.  But, I do want to make a couple of comments about the trip before I resume my real-time food journaling.  So, here it goes:

When we travel, we oftentimes are traveling with family or friends or business associates.  And, at the risk of offending them, I must state that I am going to have to vehemently disagree with the generalization that I seem to hear come out of many folks’ mouths about “eating on the road”.  According to societal wisdom, it is nearly impossible to maintain a healthy diet while away from your own home.

Well, please take a look at some of the things I ate while I was gone from MY home for 5 days last week:

IMG_42081.    Anytime I leave this house with intent to be gone overnight, I make darn certain that I have packed enough protein shake ingredients to make 2 to 3 protein shakes per day.  And, yes.  I take it all.  For this trip, I literally hauled a big container of organic honey with me as well as zip loc baggies of my flax seed and vanilla and chocolate Isagenix protein powder.  And, don’t worry.  I even took an entire jar of Organic Almond Butter as well.  (I like stuff to taste just as good on the road as it does when I am at home.)  My wife and I each packed a “shaker cup”.  And, boom.  We were “in business!”

IMG_42142.    You cannot always mix up a protein shake when you are on the road…..like how about when you are out on the ski slopes.  So, for those just in case moments when you might be tempted by something white and full of enriched processed crud, we both always make sure we have plenty of low glycemic protein bars with us.  Again, they don’t have to taste like crud to be healthy.  The current blend from Isagenix of Oatmeal and Raisin bar has only 7 grams of sugar and 18 grams of Denatured Whey protein sourced solely from Grass Fed Organic New Zealand Beef Cattle.  I think you can make that work in your body a bunch better than a piece of pizza from the ski resort cafeteria and a bag of Doritos!

IMG_41743.    And, if you are not up for a protein bar….and, need something quick to get you through to the next meal, NEVER FORGET YOUR OLD TRUSTY FRIEND, MR. ALMOND!  I never leave home without them.  And, you shouldn’t either.  Fantastic source of Omega 3 fats and just as much protein as the Peanut.  Most “foodies” want you to choose the almond over the peanut….if given the choice.  And, luckily, my body made that decision on its own as my taste buds have made the choice for me.  They prefer almonds.  (I eat nothing with Peanuts or Peanut Butter in it any more.)  Carry a Zip Loc baggie of these little babies with you everywhere!!  (Don’t gorge yourself on them!  Remember some moderation.  If you are not careful, “almond grazing” can become your new replacement for your previous fascination with “chipping” all evening long!  Neither pasttime is good.)

4.    Airport Food – Airports are finally figuring out that we don’t want to throw our health to the wind just because we made the mistake of needing to fly to get to our vacation destination.  LOOK AROUND.  Most airports offer healthy alternatives.  When we were going through Denver airport during our most current travels, we were pleased to find an organic restaurant within short distance of our gate that served organic greens and cheeses and meat that was sourced from wild game….such as Elk.  IMG_4146Take a look at the steak salad that I chose as my option for Airport Fare!  Believe it or not, that free range steak and organic greens salad was only $18….at the freaking airport.  Are you kidding me?
IMG_4144

When we saw the prices, we felt compelled to also order ourselves the aged cheese tray that you see pictured here for another $11….even knowing that were not going near the crackers on the tray.  What a deal!

IMG_41355.     What not to eat at the Airport while you are waiting for your flight…or, while you are on your flight.  Please take a look at some of the attached pics.  The Whole Grain Fig Bars might tempt you.  But, let’s not fall for that exciting Whole Grain announcement on the packaging.  As we all know, that is the last thing your body wants….unless what you are searching for is a major glycemic (sugar) spike within your body’s internal mechanism.

IMG_4134

You can also stay away from literally everything at this “self serve” counter unless you want a similar glycemic spike.

IMG_4141And, finally, let’s not even think about diving into a bag of those innocent-seeming peanuts that the friendly flight attendant is handing out like candy……Why?  Because they ARE candy.  Honey Roasted Peanuts.  So, all that might have been good in them has been cooked away.  And, then, they lathered the resulting dead husk of a nut with some honey.  All that is left is a nice glycemic spike….. to rival the rapid ascent you just experienced upon takeoff.

6.     Dinner on Vacation.  It may amaze you to learn this.   But, it is true.  They basically have the same food at restaurants in other states as that which you can purchase in your own home town.  So, if you are able to eat Low Glycemic at your local restaurants…..(of course, you are putting your lives in the hands of the Chef in back)……you ought to be able to eat Low Glycemic when you are on the road at a restaurant.  Here are some meals that I ate while I was on my trip to Sun Valley:

IMG_4168This is meat from Free Range Beef Shoulder paired with brussel sprouts and onions (sauteed in olive oil and real butter ….according to our server) and a few carrots.  Yes.  I know the carrots might be a little higher glycemic than what you ought to be putting in your mouth.  But, hey.  I didn’t ask for them!  And, I figured they probably wouldn’t do me quite as much bad as a big serving of mashed potatoes.  So, I ate them.  And, I don’t think it impacted my waistline.

IMG_4167

Here is something else that came out with that same dinner.  Needless to say, that Polenta cake never made it near my mouth. But, the green stuff did NOT make a return trip to the kitchen!

7.     Oh.  I almost forgot.  Breakfast.  As you can surmise by a brief review of my postings, I have a tendency to “skip breakfast” and drink an Isagenix Protein shake instead.  But, when you are on vacation, you shouldn’t be in a rush.  And, if you are not in a rush, you have time for that Omelette that I am always saying you ought to be eating every morning.  As you can see, I made short work of mine that morning….and, in fact, almost every morning.  DO NOT EAT THE MELON YOU SEE PICTURED.  Let’s stick with berries.  As you can see, I made the server go back and get me the bowl of strawberries that I had originally ordered in place of the “seasonal fruit”.  Granted.  The strawberries were probably not organic.  But, I am still going to argue that they represent a better “food” choice than Cap’N Crunch while you are on the road!  And, check out that beautiful strip of bacon.  Don’t be afraid of that.  A bit of animal fat in your morning will do you good.  (I promise.)  Wish I had taken a picture of my belly right after I ate all that breakfast.  No bloat.  No glycemic spike.  In fact, I was ready to Rock N Roll on the ski slope with my wife and Charly Kate Curry!

Let me wrap this vacation discussion up.  To make a long story short:  I really intended to “let my hair down” a little bit on the trip and have some cheat meals.  But, the truth of the matter is that I just didn’t want anything  except for exactly what I ordered each time I ate.  That pretty much describes most of my days……at home OR abroad.

If you are eating Low Glycemic, your body doesn’t experience the spikes and plunges that the average american feels as the plod along eating the Standard American Diet of bread, grains, potatoes, pastas, sodas, white rice, processed chips and candies….you get the picture.  And, you will notice very shortly after stopping the glycemic spikes and plunges that you just don’t crave things that cause such erratic internal bodily behavior.

Having said all of that, I did eat some Strawberryish desert thing that was made by one of our final night dinner guests.  I did not want to offend the person who prepared it.  And, quite frankly, it was darn good!  (But, I didn’t yearn for any more of it the following day or night….or, any of the past 8 days since its ingestion.)

I hope this little posting gives you some help in your goal to make an effort to NOT gorge yourself the next time you take a break from your home locale!!!
