Sunday. Cheat meal day. Guess where I will be eating it?

Well, I was supposed to do two hours on the road with my fellow cyclists this morning. But, I just didn’t feel like getting out of bed. And, as such, it just didn’t happen. Now, is that “okay” for me…..but, not for you? Probably so…..unless you are fit and healthy. And, your belly is flat. Not bragging here…….you have all seen my belly plenty of times….and, will continue to see it again. My belly is what the “average American belly” should look like…..rather than the igloo shaped interior refrigerator that the “average American belly” seems to be attempting to impersonate (with more and more success in the past 10 to 20 years!) Did you know that belly fat is the most directly linkable area of fat to heart disease and type 2 Diabetes? If you have belly fat, be concerned….seriously….it is a precursor of every kind of long term health problem….even, oddly enough, cancer. For most folks, if you got your belly flat through eating right and exercising appropriately, a flat belly is a very good indicator of good ongoing future health possibilities….of course, genetics play a role here too. But, even the guy with a family history as long as your arm of early heart disease and/or cardiac death can shake up the game significantly by keeping his belly flat during his lifetime. So, please Just Eat What I Eat. It will do your belly good!

And, today’s breakfast was: An Undenatured Whey Protein shake with a ton of Living IMG_4950Tree Community Raw Organic Almond Butter mixed up in it. I meant to try adding a bit of cinnamon to it this morning. I think it would add a nice additional flavor to the vanilla, chocolate, almond butter, honey, and flax seed flavors that are going on in there. And, perhaps a tad more importantly, Raw Organic Cinnamon is suspected of ongoing and future health benefits…..as are most organic spices. Anyhow, I forgot to add the Cinnamon. But, no need for worry. I have a large jar of the Raw Organic Cinnamon on the way from Living Tree Community as I write this. I eagerly anticipate its arrival on about Tuesday of this week. I will let you know the outcome of the taste test as soon as it has been completed. For now, I had to satisfy myself with my already fantastic favorite shake mixture in the world….about 600 of the best calories that ever made their way to someone’s tummy…almost all of it from protein and healthy fat sources….almost none of it from anything approximating sugar or a source of any IMG_4952glycemic spike. I chased that shake down with a piece of hormone free, anti-biotic free bacon. And, I finished off the morning’s repast with a big bowl of Organic Berries from our good friends at Door-to-Door Organics. (Organic food…including berries…delivered to your doorstep 365 days out of the year!) I also watched my triplet 3 year olds….(almost 4 year olds) ….polish off about $8 of Organic Berries of their own, a little bit of bacon, and some organic protein bar thing from Door to Organics (that I had purchased on the theory they might eat it and avoid eating something that would spike their blood sugar through the roof…wow, they actually ate it)……..not sure what their morning’s food bill was. But, I am sure that it was worth it. They don’t need a belly full of chemicals any more than Angie or I do! Get your kids eating what David Eats. It will do their belly good……too! 馃檪

Sadly, I continued my roll of bad decision making today with yet another Quick Fix IMG_4953protein bar’s ingestion. In fairness to me, we were trying to run out the door (with triplets in tow) to go pick Charly Kate up from a sleepover….halfway across town…and, had to be back in time to get her swimming gear together and have her back out the door to a swim party at 2 pm. So, maybe the Protein Bar was my only realistic option that did not involve a Drive Thru….Wow. imagesI truly NEVER go through a Drive Thru these days. I don’t remember the last time I even experienced one. (Does it still work the same way? You pull up. Order. And, they shove stuff that looks kind of like food and is likely to shorten your lifespan through your car window for you to eat. And, then, you give them money for doing it??!!! Are we ALL nuts?!)…….Sorry for the long digression! I just had a WOW moment while contemplating the act of purchasing Drive Thru food. Will anyone that is sane still be eating it 20 years from now…..if so, it certainly won’t be fake food that they will be handing you out the drive thru window. 聽(At some point, all the folks willing to eat that crud…and, probably their descendants too….will be prematurely deceased.) 聽Folks, if you are still “getting yourself into situations” that require a stop for calories at a Drive Thru Fast Food Restaurant, you are kidding yourself about the level of effort you are making compared to the level of effort you are going to have to make to be successful at being healthy and lean. 聽Keep reading…………..

Let’s get back to the topic at hand. 聽And, if you are keeping up with the monologue, you have to be wondering how we squeezed lunch into this crazy day. 聽We rushed out to pick IMG_4954up Charly Kate Curry from her sleepover all the way across to town…only to rush back home and try to get her ready for a birthday party 2 hours later which was also all the way across town. 聽When confronted with such an unexpectedly tight schedule….and, a lunch hour and an empty belly….you really only have one choice, don’t you? 聽Fast food? 聽I mean you cannot just skip a meal, can you? 聽Actually, that is NOT the correct answer. 聽As I have mentioned again and again, you are going to have to push your nutrition up in your mental prioritizing list a bit. 聽You cannot just wait until the last possible second….when you are half-starved….to start to thinking 聽about from what direction your next calories are going to be derived! 聽Seriously. 聽That kind of thinking is what got you the round belly in the first place. 聽Flat bellies take a little bit of thought. 聽And, with all the running around that Angie and I knew we were going to be doing today, you can bet that we had Protein bars with us….and, also, we had ALL the ingredients necessary to mix up our Protein Shakes (and the requisite shaker cups within which they could be mixed!) 聽As it happened, we had just enough time to mix up our Protein Shakes in the comfort of our own homes (while Charly Kate threw on her bathing suit.) 聽And, 12 minutes later, the whole Curry Clan was back on the road in the Honda MiniVan to run Charly Kate back across town for her Water Slide Birthday Party!

You are probably starting to notice that I really haven’t ingested much “real” food/food today. 聽(I did have one piece of bacon and a bowl of berries.) 聽Believe it or not, you will IMG_4956not die if you do not get to ingest “real” food for an entire day. 聽I have done without anything but Protein shakes and Almond Butter for plenty of days and never had an issue. 聽But, for most of us, at some point, we do like to get a little whole food in us. 聽For now though, I was going to have to tide myself over just a wee bit longer with some Wild Venison Summer Sausage….followed about an hour or so later by a heaping tablespoon of Raw Organic Almond Butter (without the apple slices.) 聽As a rule, the less you need IMG_4957of the Apple Slices this late in the afternoon, the better. 聽Your body really just does not like the higher glycemic spike associated with the ingestion of fruit….it is okay in the morning. 聽But, let’s skip it as much as possible in the afternoon. 聽Time to really flatten out the insulin and glucose levels for the rest of the day if we wish to have any hope of flattening out that belly (and reducing your chances of future heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer………..)

Having said all of that, it is time for me to really spike the old insulin levels cuz today is Sunday. 聽And, on Sunday, Angie and I spend the last portion of the triplet’s afternoon nap sitting in the bar area of Houston’s Restaurant….cozily eating our IMG_4959once per week “Cheat Meal”. 聽And, today was (thankfully) no exception. 聽As you can see, we started it off with their signature Spinach Dip and Chips. 聽(Wow. 聽Eating chips is pretty much the same thing as sitting there eating Snickers Bars. 聽Pretty similar glycemic spike from either one. 聽So, think real hard about how often you want to allow one to pass your lips on the way to your belly!) 聽I even went “all out” and had my once-per-week Diet Coke. 聽I do love those suckers. 聽But, again, the artificial sweetener in a diet coke causes just as much a spike to your insulin levels as if you had just gone ahead and drank a regular Coke. 聽For additional info on this topic, see my posting on the evils of Artificial Sweeteners. 聽(So, why did I drink the Diet Coke? 聽Taste. 聽I 20130413-214926.jpgactually prefer it to Regular. 聽And, this is my Cheat Meal after all. 聽I am going to drink what I want.) 聽I finished it all off with their Club Sandwich. 聽I almost didn’t do it as I thought about all the bang my innards were going to feel from the insulin spike off all that bread on the sandwich. 聽But, seriously David, I think you can handle one sandwich with bread one time per week. 聽All in all, this meal was probably just about as inwardly treacherous (the correct term is “oxidative stress”) as if I had just ordered a Chocolate cake and eaten half of it by myself. 聽Seriously. 聽So, why didn’t I do that? 聽Cuz I don’t like Chocolate Cake. I like the meal I described above…….and, as a result, it is my Cheat Meal just about every Sunday of the month!

Hey. 聽Good news. 聽My neighbor called me right after I returned from dinner to let me know that he had yet another Smoked Wild Sockeye Salmon filet prepared and ready to IMG_4990be dropped off to me. 聽Remember what I said about “planning ahead”. 聽Why don’t you do a little bit of it too and keep some stuff like this around that can be used for “snacking” the healthy way. 聽(Please NO farm raised salmon anything. 聽Let’s not go into that tonight. 聽Just don’t eat it, please….ever.) 聽As you have learned by watching Me Eat What I Eat, we make a serious habit of planning ahead for healthy snacking around here…….Wild Venison Summer Sausage ring a bell to anyone? 聽My wife said to me again tonight that my blog should make it very loud and emphatic that, in order to be successful in one’s endeavor to become and stay healthy and fit and flat bellied, one must work at “planning ahead” with regard to one’s nutrition. 聽If there is one thing that I know you must absorb, it is that fact. 聽The “hang loose” manner in which you are handling your nutrition (is “nutrition” really a good word for what most people are putting in their mouths?) is nothing but a recipe for ongoing disaster when it comes to the aforementioned goals of bodyfat and fitness levels. 聽If you want to have a belly (and internal organs) like David, you are going to have to Eat What David Eats. 聽And, Eating What David Eats takes a little dog gone effort!
